An outstanding achievement in international design

Every year, the Carl-Eduard-Schulte Foundation awards prizes for recent and outstanding Master’s theses in the field of production engineering and related areas, written by graduates of technical universities, universities and universities of applied sciences in Germany.

VDI CES Award 2024

On 15 May 2024, the VDI in Düsseldorf awarded the 2024 CES Sponsorship Prize to an outstanding graduate of TU Dortmund University.
Prof. Dr Hans-Georg Schnürch, Chair of the CES Advisory Board, presented the certificate and prize money to the lucky winner, Jan Lucas Brause, together with Dr Frank Völker, Managing Director of CES, and Jean Haeffs, Managing Director of VDI-GPL. 

Award winner Jan Lucas Brause, MScThe topic of the award-winning and pioneering Master’s thesis in the field of production engineering:
"Analysis of process forces and dynamics in BTA deep drilling and qualification of micromagnetic testing systems for in-process characterisation of surface integrity"

Boring and Trepaning Association (BTA) deep drilling is used as a machining process for producing bores with large diameters and a length-to-diameter ratio greater than ten.
Due to the characteristic chip removal process, in which the chips do not come into contact with the bore wall, this method enables a high bore quality to be achieved; Among other things, this process is used in the machining of hydraulic cylinders, landing gear components in the aerospace industry, and components for the chemical industry.
As part of his Master’s thesis, Mr Brause investigated the influence of process control variables on the forces, moments and dynamic properties occurring during the process, as well as on the surface finish of the deep bores. In addition, a non-destructive evaluation of the surface layer is carried out using what is known as magnetic Barkhausen noise, which provides information regarding the planned use of sensor technology in the control loop of the deep-hole drilling process.
This comprehensive thesis describes, in a logical and structured sequence, the motivation behind the investigations, the current state of the art, the experimental conditions of the investigations, and the evaluation and analysis. In industrial practice, the results of this thesis can be used to improve process reliability. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that a testing system for measuring micromagnetic parameters can be applied in a rotating borehole.

This thesis was carried out at the Institute of Machining Technology within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TU Dortmund University. It was supervised by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Prof. h.c. Dirk Biermann of the Institute of Machining Technology within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at TU Dortmund University.

To mark its 150th anniversary, C.Ed. Schulte GmbH Zylinderschlossfabrik established the non-profit Carl-Eduard-Schulte Foundation in July 1990 to promote outstanding scientific achievements by young engineers and scientists in the field of new products and production techniques, particularly in the ‘locks and keys’ sector as well as for related and comparable sectors employing similar production technologies.

Since 1991, 87 young engineering graduates have been awarded the prize. Including the 2024 award ceremony, a total of around 159,500 euros in foundation funds has been distributed. All prize winners have produced an outstanding diploma thesis, final project or research paper in the field of modern production technology in metalworking, as well as in all related and associated specialist areas.

Design and theoretical work on the development of new components and sensors for locking and security systems using modern tools.

Particular emphasis is placed on assessing the practical applicability of the results in mechanical engineering and toolmaking, as well as in the manufacture and assembly of locks and locking systems.

Schulte GmbH Zylinderschlossfabrik, Velbert, to graduates of technical universities, universities and universities of applied sciences in Germany, thereby recognising outstanding and pioneering diploma and master’s theses in the field of production engineering.
